Heavy-duty powershift
The EP range is designed for demanding off-highway duty cycles with high tractive loads.
ZF Construction Machinery
ZF ERGOPOWER L2 is a heavy-duty powershift transmission family for demanding off-highway vehicles. It combines torque-converter performance, smooth automated shifting, high tractive force and robust driveline integration for high-load construction work.
Designed for demanding machine cycles, the family supports controlled movement, efficient transfer operation and application-specific integration in heavy construction vehicles such as articulated dump trucks and graders.
ZF ERGOPOWER L2 combines product characteristics that matter in demanding off-highway work. For owners and workshops, correct identification turns those characteristics into a reliable service and repair path.
The EP range is designed for demanding off-highway duty cycles with high tractive loads.
Automated shift strategies support consistent machine operation and operator comfort.
Torque-converter and powershift operation support controlled movement under load.
The documented EP range extends the heavy-duty application envelope through EP 320 to EP 520.
Transmission controls and driveline functions are matched to the machine and duty cycle.
The transmission family is intended for demanding construction and off-highway environments.
Standard L2 and Generation A have different lubricant classes and service intervals.
Correct identification creates a reliable route for diagnosis, parts, oil and repair planning.
ZF ERGOPOWER L2 combines transmission hardware, controls and application-specific functions. Understanding the operating concept helps owners and workshops describe symptoms accurately before diagnosis or repair.
The EP configuration combines torque-converter drive with powershift operation for high-load machine work.
Standard L2 and Generation A must be treated as distinct service groups, not merged by the shared EP name.
The ERGOPOWER architecture can use lock-up and direct-drive functions where the application configuration supports them.
The documented EP application chart covers 8 EP 320, 370, 420 and 470 configurations for heavy articulated dump trucks.
EP 520 is shown in the heavy off-highway range; EP 520 A and EP 520 R require separate identification and evidence handling.
The ZF type plate, part list number, ZF unit serial number, machine serial number and operating history remain essential before parts or repair decisions.
The application and designation ranges below help owners and workshops narrow the identification route. They do not replace the exact machine, serial number and ZF type-plate check.
| Application | ZF designations | Application range and service context |
|---|---|---|
| Articulated dump trucks | 8 EP 320, 8 EP 370, 8 EP 420, 8 EP 470 | Documented heavy articulated-dump-truck installations with Doosan, John Deere and Liebherr evidence. |
| Heavy off-highway applications | EP 320–EP 520 | The EP range is positioned for high-load construction machinery; confirm the exact machine and current product scope. |
| Graders and heavy machines | EP 520 | The construction catalog references EP 520 in grader applications up to 77 t and up to 50 km/h in the stated configurations. |
| Rail-related variant | EP 520 R | Keep EP 520 R separate from the standard off-highway EP 520 range and verify the rail-specific service context. |
The installation records below show exact OEM and machine relationships where available. A listed vehicle is an identification lead, not permission to assume interchangeability.

ERGOPOWER L2 and ERGOPOWER L2 (Generation A) are not part of the 03G Genuine ZF service-fill grouping used by standard WG and cPOWER units. Their approved service-fill logic is class-based and generation-specific.
Standard L2 uses TE-ML 03 classes 03A, 03B, 03C, 03H and 03K. Generation A uses 03H and 03M. Do not substitute ZF PowerFluid Plus or ZF PowerFluid C-Plus from the family name alone; confirm the exact EP designation, temperature and current TE-ML information.
Original ZF Factory Fill. Service-fill selection follows TE-ML 03 classes 03A, 03B, 03C, 03H and 03K for the exact identified unit.
Original ZF Factory Fill. Service-fill selection follows TE-ML 03 classes 03H and 03M for the exact identified unit.
The initial ERGOPOWER L2 and Generation A service is a filter-only operation at 100–500 operating hours. Subsequent filter and oil intervals differ by generation and identified service group. Replace filters with every oil change and use only original ZF High Performance filters.
| Application group | Relevant models and classes | Initial service | Subsequent service |
|---|---|---|---|
| ERGOPOWER L2 | EP 320–EP 520; classes 03A/03B/03C/03H/03K | Initial filter-only service at 100–500 h | Filter and oil service at 1,000 h |
| ERGOPOWER L2 (Generation A) | EP 320 A–EP 520 A and EP 520 R; classes 03H/03M | Initial filter-only service at 100–500 h | Filter at 2,000 h; oil at 4,000 h |
The EP type plate, part list number and ZF unit serial number are the final authority. Oil selection, filter part number and interval must be checked against the exact transmission group, generation, operating temperature and machine application.
Practical answers for vehicle owners, workshops and manufacturers planning diagnosis, maintenance or delegated repair.
The EP designation, part list number and ZF unit serial number are the starting points. Standard ERGOPOWER L2 covers EP 320, EP 370, EP 420, EP 470 and EP 520, while Generation A uses the A variants and includes EP 520 R. Because the TE-ML class sets and service intervals differ, ATS must confirm the type plate, part list number and unit serial number before recommending oil, filters or parts.
The EP designation identifies the transmission family and nominal variant, but the part list number and ZF unit serial number link the installed unit to its production configuration and service information. They help distinguish standard L2, Generation A and special variants such as EP 520 R before a lubricant, filter, parts or repair recommendation is issued.
The TE-ML 03 schedule separates the initial break-in filter service from the later oil service. For both standard L2 and Generation A, the first filter-only operation is due at 100–500 operating hours, after which the applicable generation-specific filter and oil intervals apply. The removed filter can also provide useful evidence of break-in debris or abnormal wear when assessed correctly.
Standard L2 and Generation A do not use the 03G Genuine ZF PowerFluid grouping shown for cPOWER and many WG applications. Standard L2 is listed under classes 03A, 03B, 03C, 03H and 03K, while Generation A is listed under 03H and 03M. The applicable class, viscosity and ambient-temperature range must therefore be checked against the exact generation and current TE-ML information.
ATS supports identification, technical diagnosis, maintenance planning, parts and lubricant selection, repair or overhaul coordination, and manufacturer-delegated warranty work. For a focused assessment, send a clear photo of the ZF type plate, including the part list number and ZF unit serial number where visible, the machine OEM, model and machine serial number, operating hours, fault codes, symptoms, and the oil and filter history.
