Precise steering geometry
The axle is designed to support predictable steering response and manoeuvrability in field and transport conditions.

ZF TERRASTEER is a modular tractor steering-axle family engineered for precise steering geometry, high admissible axle loads and confident manoeuvrability. Its slim design supports ground clearance and practical packaging while standardized components allow the axle to be adapted to demanding 4×4 applications.
Large steering angles, optional brakes, differential locks and steering-angle sensors support different vehicle concepts. Exact load approval, equipment and axle identification remain specific to the tractor installation.
The product benefits below describe the operating value of the family for agricultural vehicle owners and service specialists.
The axle is designed to support predictable steering response and manoeuvrability in field and transport conditions.
The TSA range supports high static axle loads, including configurations used with front-loader operation, subject to vehicle approval.
Steering angles up to 55 degrees can improve manoeuvrability and help limit unnecessary soil disturbance.
The axle layout supports ground clearance and installation space around the front of the tractor.
Brakes, differential locks and steering-angle sensors are available where specified by the exact axle and vehicle.
Correct identification separates steering, articulation, bearing, brake, differential and lubrication work before parts are selected.
The functions below show how the product works in the vehicle and which systems must be considered when a symptom appears.
The steering knuckles, articulation points and geometry work together to provide controlled wheel angle and return behaviour.
The final-drive arrangement transfers torque to the wheels while maintaining the axle’s compact off-highway layout.
Brake equipment is configuration-specific and must be diagnosed together with the wheel ends and hydraulic actuation.
Where fitted, the differential lock changes traction behaviour and must not be confused with a steering or wheel-end fault.
Where equipped, the sensor provides a control input that can affect vehicle behaviour and fault interpretation.
Front-loader work, axle load, articulation, tire fitment and operating environment influence inspection and service decisions.
TERRASTEER is a modular steering-axle family. ZF describes a common axle platform with standardized components and a range of options that can be selected for the vehicle installation.
Why this matters: TSA model, axle dimensions, load approval and installed options determine the correct inspection, lubrication, steering, braking and diagnostic route.
The table summarizes the verified product designations and application boundaries. Exact compatibility remains dependent on the individual vehicle and unit.
| Application | Designations | Typical range and use |
|---|---|---|
| Tractor 4×4 applications | TSA 09, 11, 12, 14, 16, 20, 23 and 26 | The published range covers reference power values from approximately 90 to 260 HP; axle load and vehicle approval are model-specific. |
| Front-loader operation | TSA family configurations | Static front-axle load with front-loader operation is published by model and must be checked against the vehicle approval. |
| Field and transport work | TERRASTEER steering-axle family | Precise geometry, ground clearance and manoeuvrability support general agricultural tractor operation. |
The table below lists documented OEM and vehicle installations for the ZF agricultural product family. Use it as an identification aid, then confirm the exact unit from the type plate before ordering parts or planning repair work.
Swipe or use the arrows to browse the complete agricultural-vehicle installation list. A listed vehicle is an identification lead, not permission to assume interchangeability.
Swipe horizontally on mobile or use the arrows and page dots to browse all pages.
This identification reference groups the documented Agriculture OEM associations by ZF designation. Use it to narrow the search, then confirm the exact unit from the vehicle and type plate before selecting parts or planning service work.
| OEM / manufacturer | ZF TERRASTEER variants |
|---|---|
| AGCO | TSA 20 |
| Claas | TSA 23 |
| YTO | TSA 20 |
A listed association is an identification lead, not permission to assume interchangeability. Confirm the exact type plate and vehicle installation before parts or service decisions.
TERRASTEER axle service follows TE-ML 21 and the exact TSA model, equipment and vehicle duty. The axle, wheel ends, brakes, differential and steering system must be treated as related but separate service areas.
| Product group | Application | Class / boundary | Service guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| TSA 09–26 | TERRASTEER tractor steering axles | TE-ML 21C / 21E / 21F / 21G / 21N | Current ZF PowerFluid Gear LS or ZF PowerFluid Plus provision depends on the applicable class. |
| TSA axle service | Initial oil change | 1,500 operating hours for documented axle groups | Confirm the exact class and vehicle instruction before applying an interval. |
| TSA axle service | Subsequent oil change | 1,500 or 3,000 operating hours by lubricant class | The exact TE-ML class determines the interval; do not generalize across TSA models. |
The exact unit, vehicle configuration and operating conditions must be confirmed from the type plate and service information before parts, oil or repair work is planned.
Technical answers for tractor owners, agricultural workshops and manufacturers.
Separate steering geometry and linkage from axle articulation, wheel-end bearings, planetary gears, differential, brakes and lubrication. Check play, leaks, temperature, tire fitment, load history and noise under different steering angles before deciding that the complete axle is damaged. Send the exact TSA identification and measurements to ATS for a precise repair route.
A sensor or its wiring can influence control feedback and fault messages, but it does not replace checks of kingpins, joints, steering cylinders, articulation, wheel bearings or axle geometry. Compare the reported wheel angle with the physical position and diagnostic values, then use the exact sensor and axle configuration for testing. ATS can separate control feedback from mechanical wear.
TERRASTEER axles are covered by TE-ML 21 classes, but the class and interval depend on the exact TSA model and service provision. ZF PowerFluid Gear LS and ZF PowerFluid Plus are assigned by class, not by a generic tractor-oil label. Confirm the axle type plate and current list with ATS before draining or refilling.
Removal is considered when measurements show excessive articulation or wheel-end play, persistent leakage, bearing or planetary damage, brake contamination, differential failure or housing damage. Adjustment or external component repair may be sufficient in other cases. ATS can define the required inspection and repair scope from the axle identification and operating history.
Send ATS the data from the axle identification table, including the Part List Number and Serial Number, together with the tractor manufacturer and model, machine serial number, operating hours, steering or braking symptoms, oil history and any available diagnostic information. We will help define the appropriate next step for parts, diagnosis, repair or remanufacturing.
