Electric-hydrostatic CVT operation
The concept combines electric drive with hydrostatic-mechanical ratio behaviour to support continuous speed control in electrified tractors.
ZF Agriculture
ZF eTERRAMATIC is a fully electrified hydrostatic CVT solution for battery-electric and fuel-cell tractor architectures. Based on the TERRAMATIC concept, it is designed to retain familiar tractor functionality while combining electric drive control, continuous speed management and flexible integration into the vehicle electronics.
ZF documentation uses eTMG and eTMT source designations within the eTERRAMATIC electrified architecture. The system supports demanding agricultural operation with integrated control of PTO functions, mechanical PTO interfaces and HMI/control-unit components, subject to the exact vehicle implementation.
The product benefits below describe the operating value of the family for agricultural vehicle owners and service specialists.
The concept combines electric drive with hydrostatic-mechanical ratio behaviour to support continuous speed control in electrified tractors.
The architecture is intended to retain the familiar driving performance and operating functions of the conventional TERRAMATIC family.
The system is designed for battery-electric and fuel-cell vehicle architectures with a suitable high-voltage system.
Control of power take-offs and the mechanical PTO can be integrated into the tractor system where specified.
HMI and control-unit components can be integrated into the existing vehicle architecture to reduce duplication and improve system coordination.
High-voltage, cooling, control, electric machine and mechanical transaxle checks must be separated during troubleshooting.
The functions below show how the product works in the vehicle and which systems must be considered when a symptom appears.
The supplied data sheet documents eTMT 09 and eTMT 11 configurations with different input power, torque, speed and rear-lift values.
The data sheet identifies a 700 V nominal system; the complete vehicle voltage and safety architecture must still be confirmed.
The electric-hydrostatic concept supports stepless speed management for field and transport operation where the vehicle is configured accordingly.
The system can control power take-offs or the mechanical PTO through the vehicle control architecture.
Electric machines, power electronics, cooling circuits and control units must be assessed together when symptoms occur.
Isolation, discharge, interlock and measurement require an appropriate high-voltage procedure before mechanical work begins.
The table summarizes the verified product designations and application boundaries. Exact compatibility remains dependent on the individual vehicle and unit.
| Application | Designations | Typical range and use |
|---|---|---|
| Battery-electric tractors | eTERRAMATIC electric-hydrostatic CVT | Electric-hydrostatic CVT operation for BEV tractor architectures where the complete vehicle system is approved. |
| Fuel-cell electric tractors | eTERRAMATIC electric-hydrostatic architecture | The public ZF description includes FEV architectures; exact fuel-cell, voltage and vehicle integration remain configuration-specific. |
| Tractor implement work | PTO and mechanical PTO compatible configurations | PTO control and HMI integration support agricultural work where the implementation is specified. |
| Published eTMT data | eTMT 09 / eTMT 11 | The data sheet lists 40/50 km/h, 395/450 Nm input torque and 3,300/5,300 kg rear-lift values by configuration; these are not universal ratings. |
The current official eTERRAMATIC data does not publish a universal lubricant, filter interval or TE-ML oil card. Service planning must therefore begin with high-voltage safety, electrical diagnostics and exact mechanical-transaxle identification.
| Product group | Application | Class / boundary | Service guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| High-voltage system | 700 V nominal eTERRAMATIC architecture | Vehicle-specific | Apply the qualified high-voltage safety procedure before access or measurement. |
| Electric-hydrostatic drive | eTMT 09 / eTMT 11 | Exact vehicle configuration | Check inverter, motor, cooling, control-unit communication and live data before mechanical removal. |
| Mechanical transaxle section | TERRAMATIC-based mechanical functions | No universal oil card published | Do not copy conventional TERRAMATIC oil or intervals without a matching service source. |
The exact eTERRAMATIC designation and, where shown, its eTMG or eTMT source designation, together with the voltage architecture, vehicle control system, fault data and mechanical identification, are required before diagnosis or repair planning.
Technical answers for tractor owners, agricultural workshops and manufacturers.
The system adds high-voltage isolation, electric machines, inverter control, cooling and vehicle-network communication to the mechanical transaxle. Reduced drive, warning messages or abnormal response can originate in any of these areas. The system must be made safe and tested in a defined sequence before a mechanical failure is assumed. ATS can guide the diagnostic route.
Record the exact eTERRAMATIC designation, including the eTMG or eTMT source designation where shown, together with warning and fault codes, battery state, temperature, load, direction and whether PTO or rear-lift functions were active. Check isolation, interlock, inverter, cooling and control communication with the correct qualified procedure before opening the transaxle. Send the complete information to ATS for assessment.
Not automatically. The current eTERRAMATIC data does not publish a universal lubricant, filter interval or TE-ML card, and the electric-hydrostatic architecture must be matched to the exact mechanical service information. Do not copy a conventional TERRAMATIC provision without verification. ATS can check the unit before service work.
Removal should follow high-voltage safety checks, fault-memory and live-data analysis, inverter and motor tests, cooling checks, communication checks and confirmed mechanical symptoms such as noise, contamination or internal damage. An electrical warning alone does not prove a mechanical transaxle fault. ATS can define whether the next step is electrical diagnosis, component repair or remanufacturing.
Send ATS the data from the transmission identification table, including the Part List Number and Serial Number, together with the tractor manufacturer and model, machine serial number, operating hours, voltage architecture, fault codes, symptoms, temperature, service history and any available diagnostic information. We will help define the appropriate next step for parts, diagnosis, repair or remanufacturing.
