ZF TraXon transmission

ZF TraXon is the modular automated transmission platform for heavy-duty commercial vehicles, long-haul trucks, construction vehicles and heavy haulage applications. Developed as the successor to the AS Tronic generation, TraXon combines compact design with very high transmission efficiency and electronic intelligence for modern connected fleets.

The platform is designed to reduce total cost of ownership through fuel-efficient shifting, durable driveline operation, high driver comfort and modular options for the specific vehicle mission.

Recommended original ZF lubricant

ATS recommends the following original ZF lubricant for this product:

Final compatibility depends on the ZF nameplate, exact variant and vehicle application.

ZF TraXon automated transmission for heavy-duty trucks

Key advantages

Efficient

Optimized gear design and reduced internal friction support low fuel consumption in long-haul, regional and vocational service.

Predictive

PreVision GPS strategy can use topographical data to anticipate gradients and select the most suitable gear before the road changes.

Service-ready

Diagnostics, repair, remanufacturing and spare parts support by ZF Service Partner Bulgaria.

Technical overview

TraXon is built for the demanding operating conditions of heavy transport and the construction sector. The automated shifting system improves comfort while helping keep the engine in the optimal operating range. The software and control architecture are prepared for modern cyber-security requirements and connected fleet operation.

The transmission is available as a 12-speed or 16-speed base platform. The 12-speed version is widely used for on-highway and long-haul applications, while the 16-speed version is suited to severe-duty work where closer gear steps are useful for gradients, rough terrain and heavy loads.

Modular architecture

  • DynamicPerform multi-disc clutch for construction, mining and heavy haulage start-off conditions.
  • Torque module for applications that need strong launch force and smooth driveline engagement.
  • ZF Intarder hydrodynamic retarder integrated into the transmission for downhill braking and lower brake wear.
  • PTO / PowerDivide options for hydraulic pumps, cranes, superstructures and auxiliary equipment.
  • Hybrid readiness for electrified driveline integration on modern vehicle platforms.

Model naming logic

TraXon model names follow a practical structure that helps identify gearbox architecture, torque class and top-gear strategy. A reference example is 12 TX 2621 TD.

  • 12 / 16: number of forward gears in the base transmission layout.
  • TX: TraXon family identifier (automated modular transmission platform).
  • 26xx / 32xx / 34xx: nominal torque class code used for model differentiation (confirm exact rating by type plate and ZF documentation).
  • TD: Direct Drive top gear (top ratio close to 1:1), typically selected for long-haul efficiency profiles.
  • TO: Overdrive top gear (top ratio below 1:1), typically selected where launch flexibility and highway cruising balance are required.
Code elementTypical interpretationOperational relevance
12 TX12-speed TraXonCommon in on-highway and regional heavy-duty missions.
16 TX16-speed TraXonUsed where closer ratio steps are beneficial in severe-duty work.
TDDirect Drive top gearSupports efficient engine-speed behavior in long-distance cruising.
TOOverdrive top gearSupports broader mission flexibility depending on axle ratio and duty cycle.

Fitment note: final transmission selection depends on OEM driveline setup, axle ratio, vehicle mass, route profile and homologation package. Always validate by VIN and the ZF type plate before parts ordering or service planning.

Applications

TraXon is used by leading heavy-duty manufacturers including MAN, DAF, Iveco, Ford Trucks and BMC across highway, construction and vocational vehicle platforms.
