Shifting under load
Powershift operation supports a change of ratio while the tractor continues working, helping preserve tractive effort during changing field conditions.
ZF Agriculture
ZF TERRAPOWER is a powershift transaxle family for tractors that combines dependable power transmission with smooth shifting under load. Power Shuttle, proportional clutch control and optional automatic functions help maintain productive traction while reducing unnecessary interruptions during field and transport work.
The TPT range covers medium and upper tractor power classes, with configuration options for powershift stages, PTO operation, range automation and overdrive performance. Exact equipment depends on the individual transmission and vehicle installation.
The product benefits below describe the operating value of the family for agricultural vehicle owners and service specialists.
Powershift operation supports a change of ratio while the tractor continues working, helping preserve tractive effort during changing field conditions.
Power Shuttle supports smoother direction changes when the vehicle control system and clutch calibration are correctly configured.
Valve technology helps regulate clutch engagement for controlled starts and reduced driveline shock.
The transaxle can be configured with different PTO, range and rear-lift arrangements for the target tractor platform.
Selected TPT16/TPT20 configurations support high-speed overdrive operation at reduced engine speed, subject to tire and vehicle specification.
The transmission control can exchange information with the vehicle driveline system and provide diagnostic data for structured troubleshooting.
The functions below show how the product works in the vehicle and which systems must be considered when a symptom appears.
TPT16 and TPT20 are documented with six-speed powershift; other models use different powershift configurations and must be identified individually.
Automatic forward/reverse shifting is available where specified and depends on the vehicle control strategy and clutch condition.
Optional IRS can automate range changes to complement the powershift function and improve operating comfort.
Four PTO speeds and model-specific clutch arrangements support implement work, but the exact PTO setup is transmission-specific.
Selected configurations support 50 km/h at about 1500 rpm or 40 km/h at about 1200 rpm, subject to tire size and configuration.
Where supported, sensor and actuator data can assist condition monitoring and reduce unnecessary downtime, but it does not replace diagnosis.
The TERRAPOWER range includes different powershift layouts. Public ZF data identifies distinct four-speed and six-speed configurations; the exact designation and vehicle installation remain decisive.
Why this matters: TPT designation, powershift stage count, range automation, PTO arrangement and rear-axle integration must be confirmed from the type plate and vehicle installation before parts, service or repair work is planned.
The table summarizes the verified product designations and application boundaries. Exact compatibility remains dependent on the individual vehicle and unit.

TERRAPOWER service selection depends on the TPT model, attached axle arrangement, tractor manufacturer and current TE-ML 06 entry. The same oil or interval must not be transferred between different powershift configurations.
| Product group | Application | Class / boundary | Service guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| TPT11 | TERRAPOWER powershift transaxle | TE-ML 06B / 06R / 06S where listed | Confirm the exact model and current vehicle service instruction. |
| TPT16 / TPT16B / TPT18 / TPT20 / TPT20B | T-7000 / TERRAPOWER family with attached rear axle | TE-ML 06B / 06G / 06R | The attached rear-axle half-shafts can require TE-ML 21 service provision. |
| TPT25 / TPT28 | Larger TERRAPOWER configurations | Model-specific TE-ML 06 entry | Confirm oil, filter and interval from the exact type plate and current list. |
The exact unit, vehicle configuration and operating conditions must be confirmed from the type plate and service information before parts, oil or repair work is planned.
Technical answers for tractor owners, agricultural workshops and manufacturers.
The symptom can involve clutch pressure, proportional-valve control, adaptation, oil and filter condition, temperature, sensor data, software or mechanical clutch wear. Record whether it occurs in forward, reverse, a particular range or only under load, then compare fault memory and live data before assuming a clutch replacement. Send the complete information to ATS for a structured diagnosis.
A range-specific loss of drive can point toward a clutch circuit, hydraulic supply, control-valve, sensor or internal gear-train issue rather than a general engine or axle fault. The exact TPT model, selected range, temperature, oil history, pressure behaviour and stored faults are essential to separate the possible causes. ATS can determine whether testing or removal is justified.
The correct provision follows the exact TPT designation, tractor application and current TE-ML 06 entry. A transmission with an attached rear axle may also contain half-shafts governed by TE-ML 21. Do not use a generic tractor oil or copy the interval from another TPT model without checking the complete configuration with ATS.
Overhaul becomes a consideration only after external checks of diagnostic data, clutch and range pressures, calibration, oil contamination, filter condition, leakage and control-valve behaviour. Persistent slip, abnormal noise, metal contamination or internal pressure loss can support an internal repair decision, but the evidence must be tied to the exact TPT unit. ATS can separate a control repair from a transmission overhaul.
ZF TERRACOM is a condition-monitoring function, not a separate transmission or a mechanical TERRAPOWER variant. Where supported by the specific configuration, TERRACOM uses available vehicle and transmission sensor and actuator information to monitor system behaviour, load and operating conditions. This can support earlier identification of deviations, maintenance planning and reduced downtime, but it does not replace complete diagnosis or by itself prove an internal mechanical failure. Available data depends on the tractor manufacturer and exact configuration. If abnormal behaviour occurs, send ATS the identification data, fault codes and conditions in which the symptom appears so the correct diagnostic and service route can be defined.
Send ATS the data from the transmission identification table, including the Part List Number and Serial Number, together with the tractor manufacturer and model, machine serial number, operating hours, fault codes, symptoms, operating temperature, oil and filter history and any available diagnostic information. We will help define the appropriate next step for parts, diagnosis, repair or remanufacturing.
